Laura Ortman
Laura Ortman Bio
With over four decades of playing amplified and Apache violin, a lifetime of inhaled rosin dust, Laura Ortman transmits visceral intensity and introspection through her mastery of the instrument, spoken word and field recordings. Hailing from the White Mountain Apache reservation and based in Brooklyn since 1997, Laura collides severe beauty of Arizona desert with the roaring New York grit: «I get heavily influenced by traveling and traversing. I have this psychic vista from New York and Arizona, feeling this big, sonic hug back from both places».
Her prolific career includes shows at Carnegie Hall, Pioneer Works, Centre Pompidou, MoMA P.S. 1, Rewire Festival, Whitney Museum, Venice Biennale.
Kronos Quartet, Raven Chacon, Tony Conrad, Okkyung Lee are among numerous Laura's collaborators across film and opera scoring, video and visual art.
