Danae Palaka Istanbul-based drummer blending Anatolian rhythms, contemporary jazz and electronic textural sounds. Born in Athens to a musical family partially hailing from Istanbul, she relocated there to explore the city’s heritage and her own roots. In her solo album, Velox, her energetic drumming style draws inspiration from the shared musical tradition of Turkey and Greece, blends with melodies, electronic textures designed on analog and digital synths, crafted alongside producer Nikos Dervisis. She performs live with saxophonist Ali Onur Olgun and Eren Şenkardeş on bass/synths. «Drums and rhythms take centre place in the musician’s sonic structure. Velox is Danae Palaka’s adventure in exploring her own roots, where intricate rhythms and imaginary textures are layered on top of each other» — Bant Mag «Beautifully blends contemporary jazz elements with traditional soundscapes, bringing a unique and innovative perspective» — Loft Caz Kültür Agent: Misha Geleyn Territories: Worldwide Contact: misha@charmworks.net Live performance of Danae Palaka’s track Yeditepe from the album Velox at the album’s presentation in Eksibir in Istanbul. Live performance of “9” is a 3-part improvised piece recorded at the historic Zographeio Greek School of Istanbul. It is influenced by traditional davul performance and karşılama, a common rhythm between Turkey and Greece, but also by the intertwining past and present and hüzün (a collective feeling of melancholy) that the city of Istanbul and the school itself evoke.
